Look at this beautiful brown tinted piece of pure mammoth ivory tusk. The Master Carver has expertly used the complete piece to carve a pair of rabbits in their natural surroundings. Look at the fur on the body of the rabbits. The alert eyes, delicately carved ears and the active pose show that the artist has studied the behavior of the rabbits minutely.
The tiny etchings on the rabbit’s body have given it the look of natural fur and that has been highlighted with a dark brown hand painted effect. The minute and extreme details on a piece of pure mammoth ivory lend the whole sculpture a classic look. Composing and actually crafting on genuine ivory is difficult as it is extremely fragile. Look at the tip of the sculpture and see the deeper brown color which happened due to the fact that the ivory lay buried within the mineral rich permafrost. The organic ivory absorbed the varied soil minerals and that gave it the brownish hue. It is genuine and that shows its antiquity.
The Master Carver has sculpted the background as a hillside, with layers carved in it, depicting the depth. With plants and leaves etched in detail, amidst which the rabbits frolic. One of the smaller rabbits is sitting on the ledge and looking up as if to jump on a higher platform. While the two larger rabbits are carved in detail, notice the different poses of the each of them. The rabbit on the lowest level is looking at the rabbit above and the action depicted is as if it will jump where the other rabbit is. The complete sculpture is set upon a wooden base that ensures stability and balance to the sculpture.
