The finely carved mammoth ivory tusk depicts a large rabbit playing with two smaller rabbits in the lettuce patch.
Look at the minute details of layered ivory used by the master carver to craft the rabbits, lettuce leaves and the inquisitiveness of the rabbits is clearly depicted on the piece of genuine mammoth tusk ivory.
See the veins on the lettuce leaves, the curve of the rabbit’s feet, while the surface of the ivory tusk can be seen on the sides and at the back.
The think layers of ivory that were removed to sculpt the rabbits is clearly visible, showing that it is one-piece of solid tusk that has been sculpted to provide depth to the sculpture.
It talks about the artistic ingenuity of the master carver.
The signature of the artist is clearly visible on the art-piece.
Look at the end of the tusk and the dark discoloration is due to the tusk being buried under the arctic permafrost for centuries.
Though the inner carved ivory is creamy white, the outer surface is darkish brown, signifying the organic, original mammoth ivory.
The craving is set within teakwood base that is custom designed and hand crafted for this specific artifact.
