Look at this fantastically handcrafted mammoth ivory sculpture of a dragon, a prominent character in the Zodiac pantheon. It is considered to be a cultural and spiritual symbol with aggressive tendencies but is considered to be a deity that fosters harmony, prosperity and good luck. Thus, dragons hold a prime post in the portrayal in the zodiac animals.

Sculpture of a dragon

Notice the delineated flowing lines, the exquisite detailing and the aesthetically pleasing style of sculpture. Giving wings to creativity, the Master Carver has managed to hand carve the dragon beautifully.

Don’t miss the excellent detailing on the scales that are present on the body of the dragon or the fine etching on the claws. Each key aspect of the scales and claws is proportionate and elegantly symmetrical. It is a painstakingly difficult task to work with a fragile yet solid substance like mammoth ivory yet the Master Carver has managed to not just carve but give such fragility to the whole sculpture. Notice the fluid lines, the flow of the dragon’s body, the open mouth with intricate details of the tongue and teeth, all coming together as an elegant sculpture of rare value.

Don’t miss the loops of the dragon’s body as it rides the waves. Notice the curls and the curve of waves frothing below the claws of the animal. The flowing mane, and the lapping waves have natural curls, accentuated by the Master Carver, giving the whole sculpture that has been carved on the top few layers of the mammoth ivory tusk, an exquisite and unique look. The back of the sculpture is equally intricate and clean. It is set upon a handsomely crafted wooden stand that lends durability and stability to the structure. Look at the intricate carvings on the wooden stand.
