Look at this unique sculpture hand carved in mammoth tusk ivory. Notice the completely integrated animal bodies yet each one is visible. See the rat packed between the Dragon and the monkey, while the dog and the snake are accommodated at the bottom in an upside down position. The animals are carved to perfection with each detail completely clear and visible. See it carefully and you can see that there are tiny grooves that have been painted brown to hold the color on solid ivory. The micro-thin grooves are systematic and in symmetry. From the scales on the dragon and the snake to the hair and fur on dog and rat everything is clear yet amalgamated.
Notice that apart from the hand painted brown color, there is inherent brown pigmentation in the ivory due to the mammoth tusks lying buried under the tundra permafrost. This led to the organic tusks absorbing the soil minerals, leading to discolorations in patches. The unique ball sculpture with the zodiac animals is set upon a solid base of teakwood, custom carved for this specific sculpture. The deep brown adds the right elegance to the off-white mammoth ivory tusk carving, highlighting the animals.
