Notice the beautiful full-scale lion with a massive mane and roaring pose crafted in pure mammoth ivory. See the fine detailing of the hair on the mane. Each tuff of hair is portrayed individually while don’t miss looking at the lion’s skin The roughness of the hide is clearly visible and it has not been polished to a gloss, but the near identical representation on ivory is magnificent. The whisk of the tail, ferocious looking teeth in the open mouth and the twist of the tongue, brings out the raw energy that is captured in this sculpture with painstaking portrayal. The shades of color differ in the body of the lion and the bird’s and tall grass. As the mammoth tusks lay buried in permafrost for over 10,000 years, it absorbed the natural soil minerals and caused pigmentation in milky white ivory. The tiny yet detailed feathers on the bird are visible completely and have been carved with precise perfection.
This elegant sculpture is fitted on an equally complementing wooden stand carved from original teakwood. The tiny tree leaves and branches add to the jungle look, perfect for the active lion.
