This wonderfully carved mammoth ivory tusk showcases three owls on trees.
Look at the expressions and the delicate carving done on the wings.
Each feather is clearly visible and it shows the skill of the carver as each layer of solid ivory was chiseled away and crafted into such delightful owls.
Look at the perfect round eyes, fine details, perfect curves that have been so painstakingly carved into the ivory.
In varying sizes, the owls are detailed, real-like and seem to come alive in the sculpture.
With clear lines, delicate clean curves, the skill of the artist is reflected in the intense study of the wild birds and clear demarcation in ivory.
See the beak, eyes and different types of owl feathers, each clearly delineated in solid mammoth ivory.
The sculpture of owls has been crafted from solid ivory and is carved through the layers of the tusk, as seen. Notice the dark raw look of the tusk below the carved owls.
The artist has left the mammoth ivory tusk in the natural form as found in the permafrost.
The discoloration is due to the tusk absorbing excessive amounts of minerals from the soil.
However, the natural dark colored tusk has been polished and left in the raw state, with criss-cross patterns below which authenticates that it is natural mammoth ivory.
