Description

This intricately carved mammoth ivory sculpture of rhinoceros can be seen carved to perfection. The Master Carver had showcased the exceptional skills in etching and carving with solid mammoth ivory. Notice the curve of the rhino’s horn, the rough texture of the skin and the way it has been replicated is amazing. Notice the thick and short legs of the rhino while the thick jaws are life like. The thick hide of the rhino has been carved with detail. See the toes of the rhino and the tiny etchings that are visible. See the black hand-painted eye and the ferocious expression is visible.

The Master Carver has managed to carve the whole hide of the rhino with tiny etchings that are not only symmetrical but accurately proportional. The layers of the skin as it overlaps is clearly carved. See the tiny yet alert ears of the mammoth ivory rhino. The curve and finish is exceptional. Don’t miss the tiny tail of the animal and how it has been carved on the side.

The artist has managed to sculpt the lips, nostrils and even the sagging layers of skin around the rhino’s neck with a lot of details. See the ripple in the skin and the way the Master Carver has managed to carve it in genuine mammoth ivory. Though mammoth ivory is solid, carving the delicate and fragile ivory requires special skill and experience.

Set upon an elaborately carved wooden base. Look at the wooden base on which the mammoth ivory rhino is placed. The main wooden base is surrounded by another platform of wooden slats, giving it a look of a table. The intricately carved sides of the base have traditional Oriental designs, adding élan to the mammoth ivory sculpture.
