This is a large piece of mammoth ivory tusk that has been carved in detail. Look at the raw sides and the detailed carvings on the tusk that portrays a rustic village scene of the Orient. Notice the tiny details, where men and women are busy with their everyday activities. Look at the women and men sitting beneath the large umbrella holding on to a scroll.
On another place on the tusk, the large tree is seen with a lot of leaves while a woman sits beneath it. The Master Carver has managed to add innumerable details and tiny figures all over the piece of tusk. Looking at the back, it can be seen that it is not a whole tusk, but is splintered at the back, giving a flattened look at the back. However, the Master Artist has carved intricately on the front. Notice the women with different hairstyles, selling goods in the marketplace. One of the women is sitting with a mortar and pestle, while there is another that has eggs in a basket as other women sit around looking at wares and goods.
Look closely to see the man with two children on the bridge as he lovingly puts a hand on their head. The beautifully carved wooden bridge, the panorama of the rustic scene is further exemplified by the rich creativity of the artist. Notice the clear facial features, the different types of leaves on trees and the clarity of each minute aspect of the sculpture. Spanning nearly 28 inches, with raw ivory tusk ends that have been left natural, this beautiful piece of antique ivory is a classic artwork. It has been set on an amazingly carved wooden stand that accentuates the elegance of the sculpture.
