This mammoth ivory polar bear sitting on a piece of ice has been hand crafted by an expert Master Carver that has considerable experience in sculpting mammoth ivory pieces. See the accurate proportions, the delineated lines and curves on the body of the polar bear. Look at the open mouth, the slightly visible tongue and a row of sharp teeth, despite the small sized sculpture. Carving with such precision is difficult especially when the material is as fragile as mammoth ivory. Notice the melting ice.
Polar bear carving on ivory
The Master Carver has managed to carve the solid ivory with painstaking details such that the solid ivory has been etched as if it was melting. See the smoothness and the flow with which the ice is melting. Check the position of the polar bear as it waits patiently. Carved in a crouching position, the polar bear looks aggressive and ready to get up and walk away. See the folds of the legs, the comfortable sitting position yet the open mouth with baring teeth signifies aggressiveness.
It is a single piece of the mammoth ivory tusk that has been carved. The jagged edges have been smoothen out and at the bottom, the signature of the Master Carver can be seen. Look at the etchings of the sign and the concentric rings that surround the piece of tusk. Completely using the piece of mammoth ivory tusk, the sculpture has been utilized to its maximum. At the back, the complete polar bear has been carved to perfection. Look at the melting ice and the way the streaming water drips down, which is perfectly captured by the sculptor.
Set upon a wooden base, the design has been carved with details. It not only gives stability to the sculpture but enhances the value and appeal of the figurine.
