This beautifully carved large mammoth ivory tusk with monkeys has been carved like a huge bamboo while the digits in the bamboo are etched into. There are three groups of monkeys have been carved into the soft yet fragile ivory, giving a beautiful look to the tusk. Notice the first group of monkey antics on the left. There are two monkeys sitting and holding on to peanuts.
Look at the carefully carved fur, one of the peanuts can be seen carved between the cracks in the bamboo. Coming to the other group of monkeys in the middle, see that there are two monkeys. One of the monkeys is holding on to a large peanut, while there is a half peeled banana with the monkey that seems to be coming out of the crack. Look at the way the Master Artist has carved the hollows in the solid mammoth ivory.
See the reclining monkey holding on to a peanut. The skill and artistry of the sculptor can be seen with ease. Look at the third monkey in a hunched up position within the hollow in the bamboo shoot. It has peanuts balanced near the head and seems to be nibbling on them. The tiny proportions, quality workmanship and attention to detail are excellent.
The raw cut on the edges is natural as the ancient mammoth ivory was left within the permafrost for eons, leading to drying out of the natural moisture in ivory. This leaves the ivory susceptible to cracks and fissures. However, this authenticates the ivory as genuine mammoth ivory. The complete sculpture is set upon a beautifully carved wooden stand that was custom hand crafted to lend elegance and stability to the sculpture.
