The Three Star Gods Or Three Lucky Men

The symbolic Three Star Gods- Fu Lu Shou signifies the importance of Good Fortune, Prosperity and Longevity in the Taoist aspirations and traditions. With rich cultural roots, Taoist concept goes back to the age of the Ming Dynasty and the deities of Fu Lu and Shou were considered to represent these attributes and are today equally revered. Today Fu Lu Shou is considered as a single term to represent these three attributes to living a good life.

So, how did these Three Star Gods evolve to represent these beautiful representations?

Fu Star God
With reference to planet Jupiter which is considered auspicious as per the traditional Chinese astrology and the Taoist legend that relates Fu Star with the Governor of Daozhou, Fu Star came into prominence as a symbol of Good Fortune. According to the legend, Yang Cheng, the governor risked his life to save the people from undue suffering and to commemorate his death and the historical event a temple was built in his memory. He also emerged as a symbol of Good Fortune.

Amongst the Three Star Gods, Fu is placed in the middle in the group. Mostly depicted as a scholar with a scroll in one hand or with children, the essence is that the symbolic representation is always of Good Fortune.

Lu Star God
Represented by Ursa Major or as per Chinese astronomy, it is considered to be the 6th star in the Wenchang cluster, it is said to be Zhang Xian of the Later Shu dynasty. ‘Lu’ is referenced as the government official’s salary and thus it represents the star of prosperity, rank and prosperity. This star God is worshipped independently from the other two Gods and for success in the Imperial examinations. This figurine is usually shown wearing a mandarin’s dress.





Shou Star God
The star of the South Pole in Chinese astronomy, Shou Star is considered to affect the mortal’s life span. The Shou God is characterized by a high forehead and is shown carrying a peach, a symbol of immortality or sometimes a gourd with the Elixer of Youth. Usually shown smiling, Shou Star God is considered as a good omen for longevity and good health.

All these 3 Star Gods are carved together and individually to keep at home or office. These are considered to be lucky omens and people like to keep these figurines as symbols of Good Fortune, Prosperity and Longevity.

Mammoth ivory, Elephant Ivory - real or fake?

There is always a fear that the ivory sculpture that you bought might turn out to be a fake, because as a layman you may not be able to differentiate between a clever replicas and real ivory. However, with experience in this field and handling nearly all types of ivory, it becomes easy to differentiate just by seeing it.

Even though pure ivory can be of various quality and types, the fake ivory is made from resins. The powder that is left after sawing/carving ivory or remnants from bone sculptures are not wasted but all added to resins, put into molds.
