Europa and the bull" is One of the most famous rendering of the Meissen factory since the 18th. century. Europa is represented by a nude beauty covering her nude body with a cape and sitting on the bulls back. The handsome and strong white bull is decorated with garlands of flowers and is well attended by beautiful semi-nudes Ladies attendants retrieving blooms from the basket. The grouping rests on a rocky irregular shape base with gilded scrolls. 19th. century. Incise 2694 & 149, painted red #64, Meissen blue cross underglazed swords. Measurements: 9" H x 8 1/2" base, a massive and heavy beautiful piece! Condition: Excellent with no damage. They may be a few losses to some petals/leaves that we have missed, this is natural with applied flowers and all commensurate with age. " Europa, the Phoenician Princess was the beautiful daughter of the Phoenician king of Tyre, Agenor. Zeus, the King of the gods (according to Greek mythology), saw Europa as she was gathering flowers by the sea and immediately fell in love with her. Overwhelmed by love for Europa, Zeus transformed himself into the form of a magnificent white bull and appeared in the sea shore where Europa was playing with her maidens. The great bull walked gently over to where Europa stood and knelt at her feet. The appearance and movements of the bull were so gentle that Europa spread flowers about his neck and dared to climb upon his back overcoming her natural fear of the great animal. But suddenly, the bull rushed over the sea abducting Europa. Only then the bull revealed its true identity and took Europa to the Mediterranean island of Crete. There, Zeus cast off the shape of the white bull, and back into his human form, made Europa his lover beneath a simple cypress tree. Europa became the first queen of Crete and had by Zeus three sons.

There is always a fear that the ivory sculpture that you bought might turn out to be a fake, because as a layman you may not be able to differentiate between a clever replicas and real ivory.
